The founder of Miami's religion department, Prof. Arthur C. Wickenden has been announced as the 1962 Dad of the Year.
"No one could have been more deserving of the honor," said Dean F. Donald James. Dr. Wickenden, the father of two Miami graduates, first came to the University i 1915 as director of the YMCA>
After serving in World War I, he held pastorates at Owatonne, Wis., and at Mason City Iowa before returning to Miami in 1927. For the past 35 years, Prof. Wickenden has taught at Miami on a full time basis and, until last year, was chairman of the religion department.
He is also the senior member of Miami's faculty. Graduated from Denison University, the Dad of the Year received his Master's degree and his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago.
He is the author of two books, "Time Out," a collection of essays, and "Youth Looks at Religion" is a recent revision.
A member of Phi Beta Kappa and ODK, Prof. Wickenden serves as advisor to this fraternity, Beta Theta Pi.
For many years the director of religious activities on the campus, the Dad of the Year conducted all of the chapel services. He is presently the director of the United Christian Fellowship and has served the NAACP while continuing to act as advisor and counselor to many students.
"Few individuals have done more than Arthur Wickenden for so many students," stated Dean Robert E. Stippel.
