Letters to Relatives
Thomas Rogers wrote a detailed letter to his grandmother, his mother's mother, in March 1877. He was just 24 and had been in Toledo, Ohio, since 1870. The letter describes events such as the birth of Leroy (Roy) Wickenden to Lucy Wales Wickenden, wife of his older brother, James. It describes the wedding of John Quaife, his cousin, to Eva Weaver. It describes how he had met a lady companion whom he esteems "very highly." In fact he reveals that he is building a house and that "when the nest is ready, look out for the bird!" He also describes his work and his business and provides an update on his brothers. Thomas' strong sense of purpose, perseverance, belief in education, and faith are all evident here, especially when discussing the fact that he may never see his Grandmother again on earth.
